Membrane Bio Reactors

Membrane Bio Reactors have been proven to be cost efficient and effective in both domestic and industrial applications. This technology is very useful for our clients who need treated effluent with very low characteristic variations, lower BOD, COD and TSS in order to comply with the regulatory standards or to reuse the treated water. Moreover, while Membrane Bio Reactors are used the risk of fouling reduces, cleaning frequencies are lesser and potential of gravity operation increases.

Generally, the secondary clarifier in a conventional sewage or effluent treatment plant is replaced by a membrane bio reactor. It separates biologically treated effluent from the mixed liquor with the help of membranes.

Two Membrane Bio Reactor configurations exist: internal/submerged, where the membranes are immersed in and integral to the biological reactor; and external/sidestream, where membranes are a separate unit process requiring an intermediate pumping step.

It is possible to operate MBR processes at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations compared to conventional settlement separation systems, thus reducing the reactor volume to achieve the same loading rate. The mixed liquor suspended solid concentrations range from 9000 mg/l to 13,000 mg/l. The treated effluent from the membrane bio reactor can directly be subjected to a reverse osmosis treatment without any additional intermediate process.

This technology is widely preferred by our municipal and state government clients because it is simple to operate, requires lesser control and pump equipment and can also be operated by a unskilled labour post a brief training session.
